In Accordance to Blog Action Day...

Today is Blog Action Day! For those of you who do not know what that is:

“Blog Action Day is an annual nonprofit event that aims to unite the world’s bloggers, podcasters and videocasters, to post about the same issue on the same day. Our aim is to raise awareness and trigger a global discussion.”

So with the current economic situation these day, it is no wonder why Poverty was chosen as this years topic. With the nations debt increasing and the number of available jobs decreasing, people suffering have even less ways to get help. Money is tight for a large group of Americans, but what if money wasn't a problem? Would people help this cause directly on the street?

The answer is no. The reason for this is because of the age old "what if he spends the money on drugs?" mentality that Americans have grown up with. Not every homeless person is going to spend money on drugs, but there is still a large possibility that a homeless person who is suffering from a drug addiction could very well be hungry.

So how do you help these people? There are a variety of ways. If you are in a hurry you could go into a local fast food joint and order something for them off of the dollar menu or you could Give them that bologna sandwich in your lunch that you know you're not going to eat anyways. If you aren't in a hurry, spend the day making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and taking them to people downtown who truly need it. There are also many other projects, like The Burrito Project (http://www.myspace.com/burritoproject) which make burritos and give them to the homeless, that work together in large numbers to work together in feeding the homeless.

I don't have to tell you how awful poverty is, but hopefully this blog helped remind you of a global problem that has been ignored for too long. Hopefully it also will give you ideas on how to help the poor. Thanks for listening and if you'd like more information on Blog Action Day go to www.blogactionday.org.

I read that whole thing after eating a ton of carne asada watching television and sitting in a comfortable chair and I felt pretty bad because of it.
